As part of a broader J-PAL Africa agenda, we are trying to improve access to resources for researchers and aspiring researchers from Africa who are interested in randomised evaluations. We are also working on helping talented African students enter academic careers in economics or similar disciplines.

To this end, we are organizing webinars for African students who would like to pursue graduate study in Economics (or a closely related field) abroad (specifically North America and Europe). The first of these webinars will run in April and the next two will be announced later in the year.

Webinar 1: How to prepare for graduate study abroad

21 April 2023, 2-3pm WAT

This webinar targets Africans who would like information on pathways to acquire the skills and experience that set you up for graduate study abroad and strengthen your application. In addition to representatives from the Graduate Applications International Network (GAIN) and Pathways to Research and Doctoral Careers (PREDOC), we will have a current African PhD student who can speak to the process she followed and her experience thus far, as well as a researcher in the J-PAL network who completed her studies in the United States and works at the University of Ghana.

We will share resources on application mentorship programs, scholarships and how to put together a competitive application with all applicants to the webinar.  Additionally, J-PAL staff have put together a helpful blogpost about how to choose and get into a PhD program here and it is a great read for anyone considering a doctorate degree.

Interested students are encouraged to apply here and we will send successful applicants a zoom link for the webinar. The deadline for applications is 10 April at 22h59 WAT.
